Basic training for ships operated in polar waters

AUDIENCE

All Masters, Chief Officers and Officers in charge of a navigational watch on board ships operating in polar waters.

PREREQUISITES

  • Hold a >500 Chief Officer or Master CoC.
  • Hold a Seafarers’ health service medical fitness certificate less than 12 months old.

OBJECTIVES

– Contribute to the safe operation of ships operating in polar waters.
– Monitor and ensure compliance with legislative requirements.
– Observe safe working practices, respond to emergency situations.
– Ensure compliance with pollution prevention regulations and prevent risks to the environment.

– Ship performance in ice and low air temperatures
– Operation and manoeuvrability of the ship in ice
– Basic regulatory requirements
– Crew readiness, working conditions and safety
– Pollution prevention and environmental risks

Practical training :
– Types and concentrations of ice
– Tides and currents in ice
– Effect of wind and currents on ice
– Safety speed in the presence of ice and icebergs
– Safety measures during passage through the ice
