Internship – Supervision of non-destructive testing activities on the internal water circuit of the WEST tokamak M/F
Job description
‘The objective of this internship is to participate in the preparation, performance and analysis of non-destructive testing applied to the internal machine components of the WEST Tokamak. These components are cooled by a superheated water loop (T°C = 200°C) installed in a vacuum chamber (10-6 Pa) subjected to the extreme environment of a Nuclear Fusion machine.
The results will be used to identify any anomalies and formulate recommendations for optimising maintenance strategies.
Context:
Monitoring the components cooled in a tokamak vacuum vessel is crucial to ensuring the safety and operability of this complex system. These components are subjected to high thermal and mechanical stresses during operation. Between operating phases, maintenance stops are necessary to maintain this research instrument. To date, regular monitoring of actively cooled components has not been carried out on a preventive basis. Non-destructive testing (NDT) is carried out when a new component is repaired or installed. Preventive maintenance of these elements would make it possible to assess the condition of these cooled components and detect any signs of degradation, such as cracks or corrosion, without intrusive intervention.
The candidate will be responsible for the following tasks:
– Carry out a state-of-the-art survey of the components to be monitored in the WEST
– Propose non-intrusive methods for checking these elements
– Qualify the proposed method(s) on a realistic mock-up
– Prepare and coordinate checks with the teams during the next maintenance shutdown
– Analyse and process the data
– Suggest ways of improving the monitoring and preventive maintenance processes.
Benefits of the course for the candidate:
At the end of this placement, you will have developed operational experience in the field of NDT applied to nuclear fusion research machines’.
