2025 – Internship02 – Ammonia fuelled Container Vessel design

OBJECTIVES:
Over the next decade, the ship owners will need to increase effort to fight against climate change by reducing the CO2 emission of their ships. As part of the decarbonization, ammonia offers considerable promise as an alternative marine fuel to highly reduce the ship greenhouse emission.
From the time being, no ammonia-fuelled commercial ship currently exists but many ship owners are developing concepts. In this context d2m would like to develop concept of an ammonia fuelled container ship to anticipate the further demand.

The purpose of the internship is to develop a preliminary ammonia fuelled container ship. The intern will be able to use the internal database provided by d2m.
The big challenge on an ammonia-fuelled ship is the toxicity of ammonia. The main part of the internship will be to perform a safety assessment and propose or investigate several solutions to make it feasible.

Main Internship tasks will include:
• Study the State of the art of Ammonia-fuelled Container Vessel or similar
• Perform a Rules analysis for Ammonia-fuelled cargo ship
• Define the vessel main characteristics
• Perform a safety assessment
• Investigate several solutions
o Impact on cargo capacity
o Integration
o Preliminary intact Stability
o Preliminary naval architecture loop based on the selected concept
• Ranking best solution

INPUT DATA
• Relevant Vessel drawings and documents
• d2m tools and software for calculations

DELIVRABLES
• Internship report
• Calculation notes
• Overview presentation of the study in a slideshow PowerPoint format

GENERAL CONDITIONS
• Engineering office work. None or few displacements
• Based in d2m Engineering offices at Six Fours les Plages (83)
• Office time: 37 h/week from 9h00 to 12h00 and 14h00 to 18h30
