OVERHEAT

OVERHEAT research project

The OVERHEAT project aims to provide an innovative digital solution for fire-fighting on container ships, integrating a global, real-time approach and prioritizing safety, environmental protection and regulatory compliance.

This initiative aims to pave the way for a new era of fire prevention and management in shipping.

Research theme: Maritime risk cluster

Project leader: IMAT (Italian Maritime Academy Technologies SRL)

Other consortium members: ISSNOVA, ILOT, ISL, Port of Brest, VPF, DITS srl, CRITT T&L, AKKODIS, ENSM, GTS, SeaTopic, Peopletrust, ISaSS, TOPVIEW, VFF, Caronte, Lukasiewucz Research Network – Institute of Aviation, CIRCOE

Total budget: €7m, of which €5.8m subsidized by the European Union

Start date: 01/01/2024

Estimated project duration: 3 years

Keywords: Fire, container ship, digital solution, prevention, early detection, IoT connected sensors

Project goals

The objectives are numerous:

  • reduce shipping accidents and damage to marine mammals,
  • to understand the causes of shipping accidents in order to improve their prevention,
  • implement automated systems that reduce the human factor,
  • developing and integrating digital solutions for accident prevention into ship architecture and traffic control systems,
  • detect container ship fires quickly and treat them safely, without recourse to outside intervention,
  • limit exposure to toxic combustion products for crews, coastal and port communities,
  • reduce the frequency of container ship fires.
